This record contains more secular information than the Small Plates of Nephi, including the reigns of the kings, and the wars and contentions of the Nephite people (see 1 Nephi 2:14).
For it came to pass in the commencement of the first year of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah — my father Lehi having dwelt at Jerusalem in all his days — and in that same year there came many prophets, prophesying unto the people that they must repent or the great city Jerusalem must be destroyed.
And he beheld that they did contain the five books of Moses, which gave an account of the creation of the world and also of Adam and Eve, who were our first parents, and also a record of the Jews from the beginning, even down to the commencement of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah, and also the prophecies of the holy prophets from the beginning, even down to the commencement of the reign of Zedekiah, and also many prophecies which have been spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah.
And upon the other plates should be engraven an account of the reigns of the kings, and the wars and contentions of my people. ... Wherefore, these plates are for the more part of the ministry, and the other plates are for the more part of the reigns of the kings, and the wars and contentions of my people.
And after he has led us away, he has thought to make himself a king and a ruler over us, that he may do with us according to his will and pleasure.
And because of the groanings of the earth, many of the kings of the isles of the sea shall be wrought upon by the spirit of God to exclaim, The God of nature suffers!
Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful.

And he that fighteth against Zion shall perish, saith God, for he that raiseth up a king against me shall perish. ... For I the Lord, the King of Heaven, will be their king, and I will be a light unto them for ever that hear my words.
In the year that king Uzziah died, I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
