Exaltation

To become like God and inherit Celestial glory.1 Elevation to the highest degree in which all powers are increased.2 To be exalted is to already be in possession of what one hopes to acquire in mortality; that is, Christ was already exalted. He did not come here for His advancement, according to the angel who spoke to Benjamin, but He came and descended into a “tabernacle of clay” in order to serve mankind. Although He is a glorified, eternal God, reigning in Heaven and holding the power to exist from eternity to eternity, He will condescend to dwell in a tabernacle of clay (Mosiah 1:14). If man can take that in, then he can understand what Joseph Smith said about “sons of God, who exalt themselves to be gods, before they were born” (TPJS, 375).3
